Living in Aurora, Ohio

I've called Aurora home for the past 20 years, and I still love how it mixes Western Reserve history with a lot of open space. Founded in 1799, the city was once known as a cheese-making hub. Today it's a suburban community in the northwest corner of Portage County, and the city reports about 2,800 acres of green space. State Routes 43 and 82 cross in town, and I-80, I-480 and I-271 are all within easy reach for trips toward Cleveland or Akron.

Longtime Northeast Ohioans remember Geauga Lake and SeaWorld Ohio, which opened here in 1970 and closed in 2000. The city bought the lakefront property in 2024 and is reopening it as Aurora Park at Geauga Lake, at 1100 Squires Road. The first phase is set to open October 25, 2026, with a welcome plaza that reuses the restored SeaWorld gatehouse pavilions, a Lakefront Terrace and a renovated Sunset Pier. A beach, pool and other amenities are planned for later phases. New construction has come to the area too, including Pulte's Renaissance Park at Geauga Lake neighborhood.

For shopping, Aurora Farms Premium Outlets on South Chillicothe Road has more than 50 brand-name stores. Nature lovers can head to Tinkers Creek State Nature Preserve on Old Mill Road, which has observation decks overlooking wetlands and an eagles' nest.

Public schools are part of the Aurora City School District, home of the Greenmen.
